A Problem Is Different From a Stuck State
“Things are figureoutable.” I borrow that sentence from Marie Forleo, and it’s the most useful thing I keep in my back pocket for patients who walk in sure they are the problem they cannot solve. They’re not. They’re figureoutable.
But a problem is different from a stuck state. You can think your way out of a problem. You cannot think your way out of a stuck brain. The brain is biology, and biology doesn’t bend when you try harder. You can sit with a problem all weekend and find an answer. You can sit with a stuck brain for ten years and only get tired.
Most of the people I see have been working their brain like it was a thinking problem. They’ve read the books. They’ve tried therapy. They’ve changed jobs, run, prayed. They’ve tried everything — except treating the brain like an organ.
The Brain Is an Organ
The brain is an organ — the most complex one in your body. We don’t tell people with heart disease to think positively about their heart. We don’t tell people with diabetes to journal their way out of it. We look at the organ, find what’s off, and fix it. For some reason, the brain got carved off from the rest of medicine seventy years ago. Talk and pills. Pills and talk. If neither works, the system shrugs — and the patient wonders why they can’t just try harder.
Willpower Doesn’t Grow Dendrites
Here’s the truth: willpower does not grow dendrites. That’s not a metaphor. Dendrites are the tiny branches that connect brain cells — how your brain learns and adapts. Chronic stress and chronic depression slowly shrink them. You cannot will them back. You can only create the right conditions for them to grow again.
