Have you asked, “am I depressed?”

Life has a funny way of throwing us curveballs, doesn’t it? There are days when it feels like the universe is testing our limits—work deadlines piling up, bills to pay, and just when you think you’ve got it under control, bam! Another obstacle. It’s enough to make anyone feel overwhelmed.

Is depressed the wrong word?

Maybe it’s overwhelm. Feeling overwhelmed is like trying to juggle a dozen balls at once and realizing you’ve only got two hands. It’s that moment when stress knocks on your door and makes itself a little too comfortable. We all go through it, and it’s totally normal. These feelings usually come and go as life tosses us around, but what if they stick around longer than expected?

That’s where things get tricky. According to the experts, depression isn’t just about feeling blue—it’s like having a cloud follow you everywhere, raining on your parade no matter what. It’s losing interest in things you used to love, feeling tired all the time even after a good night’s sleep, or just not feeling like yourself. Well, if you’ve been feeling down, tired, or hopeless for more than a couple of weeks, and it’s messing with your job, relationships, or even just getting out of bed in the morning, it might be time to chat with someone who knows their way around these feelings.

So, how do you tell the difference between a rough patch and something more serious?

Symptoms of Actual Depression (Clinical Depression):

  1. Persistent Sadness: Feeling down or low for most of the day, almost every day.
  2. Loss of Interest: No longer finding pleasure in activities you used to enjoy.
  3. Appetite Changes: Significant weight loss or gain without trying, or changes in appetite.
  4. Sleep Problems: Trouble sleeping (insomnia) or sleeping too much (hypersomnia).

  7. Difficulty Concentrating: Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.
  8. Thoughts of Death: Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, or suicide attempts.

Symptoms of Non-Depression (Reactions to Stress or Overwhelm):

  1. Feeling Overwhelmed: Stress or feeling overwhelmed by specific life events, like work deadlines or relationship issues.
  2. Temporary Sadness: Mood swings or temporary sadness triggered by specific events.
  3. Appetite and Sleep Changes: Changes in eating or sleeping patterns in response to stressors.
  4. Fatigue After Stress: Feeling tired or fatigued after a particularly stressful period.
  5. Difficulty Concentrating Temporarily: Trouble focusing due to stress or a busy schedule.
  6. Moodiness: Irritability or mood swings that go away once stressors are resolved.
  7. Anxiety or Worry: Feeling anxious or worried about upcoming events or challenges.
  8. Temporary Loss of Interest: Briefly losing interest in activities due to being busy or prioritizing other tasks.

Here’s the thing

Life’s too short to let the clouds linger. You deserve to feel good, to enjoy the things that make you smile, and to tackle each day with a spring in your step. So, if you’re feeling more than just overwhelmed, if the days are blending into one big gray blob, take that first step. Reach out. You’re not alone, and there are people who want to help you find your sunshine again.

Remember, it’s okay not to be okay sometimes. What matters is taking care of yourself, finding what works for you, and giving yourself the chance to shine. You’ve got this. And the journey to feeling better starts with that first, brave leap.
