This breakthrough was too good not to share!
While this patient’s story is really good, what’s even better is what I recently learned in follow-up from her counselor.
It’s really going to blow your mind!
Doris is Paralyzed by Her Grief
Doris came to me several months ago to talk about her weight issues, but as we began to discuss this struggle, the dialogue shifted to her ongoing grief and depression over her adult son’s suicide 7 years ago.
While she had tried counseling, which had certainly helped, and was on several medications to treat her depression, she was still just stuck. There was no longer much joy in her life. Her marriage had been holding on by a thread since this loss occurred, and she felt tremendous guilt over her son taking his life. She was convinced that she could have done more and prevented it.
What did she have to feel “joyful” about, anyway?
Let’s Treat Your Depression
I had her complete a depression questionnaire, and that showed that, despite the counseling and multiple meds, she still rated has having moderate depression.
We decided that rather than directly address her weight concerns right now we would instead start the infusions we provide that put depression and anxiety into remission in just a matter of a few weeks.
“I think God sent you here to have your depression treated; He just used your desire to lose weight to get you in the door,” I told her. After all, that’s what He does.
Her first infusion went well, and even by the time she came in for her 2nd infusion she was feeling better.
As treatment progressed, each time she noticed she was improving. She felt more empowered to scroll past posts on social media that would normally push her buttons and get her angry. She also noticed her patience improving.
By her last infusion, she told me that her counselor had noticed that her mood was significantly better.
When we repeated her depression assessment, her score had dropped significantly. When she came in she had moderate depression, but by her last treatment she scored a 4, which is minimal depressive symptoms.
She even looked different by the final infusion.
Follow-up From Her Counselor
I recently got to sit down with Doris’ counselor. The patient had signed a release of information, so we could talk freely.
I did not know this, but Doris had a therapy session later that day after her last infusion.
She arrived to that appointment in pretty good spirits. As she shared with her therapist her experience from the last infusion, the breakthrough that had finally occurred became evident.
During that last treatment, Doris encountered the son she lost 7 years ago, and she said that he told her to let go of her guilt over his death.
I’m not going to lie. This really got me choked up.
This is the one thing she had never been able to do, and now she had the freedom, the permission, to finally release the heavy burden of responsibility for her son’s death that she had been carrying all these years.
Spiritual Battles Being Won
I don’t know if Doris literally “saw” her son, or just felt his presence, his spirit impressing upon her the need for her to finally allow herself to heal.
But, I do know that people undergoing this treatment often have very spiritual experiences, and we get to unpack that with them regularly.
At AlphaOmega Wellness, we’re very comfortable with addressing the spiritual needs of our patients. We don’t shy away from talking about the aspects and dimensions of our lives that are not visible to the naked eye. Our office has always been built on the foundation of faith.
